How refreshing to see the relatively low budget British film The King’s Speech pick up four Oscars and that Tom Hooper took the best director award after losing out at the BAFTAS earlier this month. Being fortunate enough to have worked with Tom Hooper for a few months alongside Oscar winning actress Helen Mirren I learnt more about acting for the camera than any previous training I had. When I wasn’t needed for filming I would go to the set and see what was going on behind the camera. If you ever get the chance to work with a good director absorb everything. Good directors never bang on about their work, they don’t have to because the work says it all. Steve G Red Creative.

You don’t need money to make exciting interesting films. Working on a low budget can actually be very liberating. You know you can’t spend money, so embrace that fact and go all out and be creative…Red Creative.

The first thing you need on your film making journey is a good script. A script with something to say and interesting enough to make a quality film. The good news is you can write a quality script for free, the problem is that this is not easy. But hey filmmaking isn’t a walk in the park. If it put’s you off, you’re better off turning the page and reading the T.V listings for tonight. You ain’t no filmmaker.

The best film in the world can be elevated to the sublime by a good soundtrack. Conversely, a deeply average flick can seem like a masterpiece if the score is a hit. When you get right down to it though, it’s the music that makes a film memorable, for many years after it fades from our screens.

For instance, Gone With The Wind won the best picture Oscar for 1939. Now some people would argue that this is a very good film. Never having been able to bear watching it all the way through, it would be hypocritical to argue otherwise. But the soundtrack, with its swirling strings, was – and is – unforgettable. It didn’t win an award for the music though. But it was up against the Wizard of Oz. You can’t argue with that. Well, you can, of course. One’s a musical picture, the other’s a drama. Who’s to say which had the better score?

It’s all quiet at the Dolls house the girls lay sound asleep they had a late night performing a gig and they must get their beauty sleep.

On the other side of town the studio is being prepped for a recording and film session at the Red Creative studio this is an important day for the girls. Are they going to get to the studio? Will they emerge from their slumber? Can they get ready in time? It may sound a simple task but this is a Dolls life and a Dolls life is a hectic life.

Sound engineers check their decks, the camera man unpacks the silver cases containing lenses and tripods, microphones are screwed into place. Steve and Andy from the Red Creative team look at their watches, then at the studio clock and then each other, with a look of they will be here won’t they? written on their faces. The time ebbs away and the day grows shorter by the minute; Andy makes the call.

Lynsey Doll the fiery vivacious red haired singer looks so serene fast asleep and in a world of dreams. But then the pink Dolly phone lights up at the side of her bed, eyes opening wide she picks up the receiver. “We’re on our way” she announces. Jumping up she rallies the girls. First she wakes Alice Doll the sultry elegant husky voiced base player and then onto Layla Doll the cute baby faced fluffy guitar player and last but not least the comedic statuesque never to be taken too seriously Chelsey Doll. The girls all in their jim-jams realise their dilemma. Lynsey, Layla, Alice, and Chelsey are the Electric Dolls and they’re on a mission.

Like a military operation they go into action; hair dryers at the ready, foundation and mascara become a blur as the face paint is applied. Pulling on body hugging outfits and high heels the Dolls are ready to hit the road. Lynsey Doll gives the girls one last inspection adjusting Layla Doll’s dress. They leave the house and clamber into the Doll Mobile a pink mini bus the girls fondly name Candy. Lynsey climbs into the driving seat and hits the throttle, pushing the cd into the player Go Faster Girl one of the Electric Dolls songs fills the minibus, the Dolls sing along to the track. Speeding along highways and by ways, then along country lanes they close in on their destination. All of a sudden the mini bus breaks to a halt, Chelsey Doll leaps from the vehicle and into the road. She picks up a baby hedgehog and takes it to safety; all the girls smile and give a round of applause. Chelsey jumps back into the mini-bus and they continue their journey. Alice points to a sign on a tree it simply says “Electric Dolls next right”. Lynsey turns the steering wheel, the wheels screech into the bend and the into the studio car park; the girls made it. Grabbing their instruments they run into the studio with time to spare. Alice looks at Steve and Andy and blows them a kiss; looking relieved the guys wipe the sweat from their brow and enter the sound room.

TO BE CONTINUED

Driving along the North Circular road on a gloomy January day Andy Demetriou and Steve Gibbs co-founders of Red Creative Media talk candidly about the band project they have been working on over the last 8 months. The music, the image and what to expect when they arrive at the Survival recording studio in North Acton to see four girls play some original material written by their Lead singer Lynsey Shaw. This is a moment when you so much want everything to gel. Are the songs going to be good? Can the girls step up to the plate and be different from the manufactured girl bands we have grown accustomed to over the last decade? Can they deliver a performance that will impress an audience and gain a following? To bring a bit of attitude back into music that seems to have been lost amongst the forest of corporate yes sir no sir bands we see so much of today.

Walking into the dingy studio reception which resembled a Tarantino pulp fiction style movie we are greeted by a thirty something guy with a thin moustache and greasy hair. “We’re here to see the dolls” we tell him. Lifting his head from the newspaper he points us toward studio seven, he then looks back down at the horse racing fixtures.

Walking along the corridor and toward studio seven Steve and Andy stop and listen to the girls rehearsing. Letting them finish the number, Andy knocks on the door. On entering the studio we all greet each other and wish each other a Happy New Year. The girls all in their twenties are Lynsey, Layla, Chelsey and Alice; these girls form The Electric Dolls.

The studio space is cramped and has seen better days. The polystyrene ceiling tiles are yellow and look as though they could crumble if the music got too loud. Lynsey rallies the troops and they start their first number, a cover version of Poison Ivy with a ska arrangement. Getting warmed up they play Plastic Girl, an original song written by Lynsey which gels the girls together, they were enjoying the experience and it came across, it was so great to see instruments being played and each girl although in a band each had an individual style unlike many girl bands who stand there looking pretty miming into a microphone with some awful choreographed dance routine to go with the tacky song they are miming to. Continuing to play another five original songs you could see the appeal these girls would have on a young and varied audience.

The session over and an enjoyable one at that Steve and Andy say their goodbye’s and make their way out of the studio to the car. With different thoughts and a lot to talk about they drive back up the North Circular Rd, but this time it’s a little less gloomy because what they have just witnessed could be the start of something the music biz so desperately needs.
